For Stanford, all games are a must-win

The BCS field is confused. With so many teams sporting perfect records and no playoff to determine a champ, taking our bloggers on the ultimate task: to make a case for each team to a title shot.

The case of No. 8 Stanford Cardinal is a hard one to do right now, but it will become easier as the season progresses - and if the Cardinal to win.

Remember, Stanford started out as number 12 in the first BCS rankings last season before eventually rising to No 4

For Stanford, it starts and ends with another No. 12 this season - No. 12 is Andrew Luck. The quarterback is the most polished prospect in a decade, and he's better than he was last season when the Cardinal tidied up the Orange Bowl.

But the Cardinal is no one-trick pony. It starts with luck, but usually ends with one of his three dominant tight ends. The trio are tall, fast and physical. There is no defense in the Pac-12, which would close them down, and you'd be hard pressed to find a unity in the country that can Matchup against them. The Cardinal has a balanced running game behind Stepfan Taylor and Luck is one of the best in the country to sell play-action.

The rebuilt offensive line has evolved faster than most would have imagined, and the defense is physical and punishments. Stanford has held its last 12 opponents under 20 points. It includes three bowl teams from last season and three (so far) that is in reach bowl this year.

The question is, how Stanford will react when they are really challenged? I submit they have already been challenged. Maybe not for a full 60 minutes, but there have been times this season when they could have wilted.

They turned away one of the country's strong rushing team, UCLA, from their goal line four straight times. Had the Bruins scored on their opening drive that could result from that the game has been dramatically different.

We saw Luck bounce back after throwing a pick-six (not his fault) against Duke. Or even last weekend when the offense looked out of sync in the first half on the road against Washington State. Luck and his tight ends exploded for three second half touchdowns on his way to a 44-14 victory.

The Cardinal has been challenged enough and the whole experience will pay off as the schedule ramps up in the second part of the season. They have two games against teams ranked in the BCS Top 25 (Washington, Oregon) and it is very possible that USC and / or Notre Dame can be ranked before the game kickoff.

They will also be helped by some head-to-head matchups that will create a pair of one-loss teams, Alabama-LSU and Oklahoma-Oklahoma State. Plus Wisconsin is still tough games against Penn State and Michigan State on his list. Boise State still has TCU (which has turned into a fantastic rivalry the past few years) and they have to go on the road against a resurgent San Diego State team.

All Stanford can do is more of the same - to win big. The last nine victories have been by 25 points or more. The Cardinal have to take advantage of some nationally televised games. Rather than hoping teams ahead of them falls, giving voters a reason to move them up. Dazzle them.

But above all, do not lose. For if this tree falls, it will all hear it.
