Teenagers tend to eat more after playing video games, raising concerns that the sedentary games can fuel weight gain more than previously believed.
University of Ottawa researcher Jean-Philippe Chaput vs. eating habits of young people spent time playing with a team that just spent time resting, finding that on average, in an open buffet after play, the players are took in 163 more calories. The youth spent an hour seated and resting burn about the same amount of calories as a seated youth played video games.
"We follow participants ate significantly more after the video game," Chaput said. "Video gaming is worse than [just] being a sedentary activity."
Not only sedentary video games, there is a possibility to promote overconsumption of food, and the potential impact on health is probably worse than its limited study found, he warned. "With this study we gave people food only after the video game, but in real life we know that kids can eat while playing and probably played for more than an hour alone," he said. Chaput was found in a previous study that people given 45 minutes of sedentary work does not burn more calories than those allowed to rest for the same period. Next, Chaput plans to study the active participatory-style video games to see if the youth to play a physical game will take much more calories than they burn.
